Sa Conillera is an islet off the west coast of Ibiza. From its highest peak sits a lighthouse blinking with a rhythmic familiarity. Literary and aesthetic thinker Walter Benjamin shared this view when he lived in San Antoni de Portmany in the 1930s after escaping Nazi Germany. Using Benjamin’s thesis on the aura of art Vessel Studio investigates and celebrates the synthesis of science and art, folk and punk, making and music, creating and experience.
A much used symbol connecting modernity to ancient seafaring fire signals, the lighthouse creates a rhythm for the night. A beacon of warning and safe haven, a fleeting light and a beam of possibility in the contrast of darkness. Like the lighthouse in the dark, artists are the semaphore; the signal bearers of our existence; the fires that show us the way to perception.
This rhythm and ethos are what Vessel Studio both in Ibiza & Alicante seeks to nurture and support through the Vessel Studio Artists in Residency program and workshops.
